About Skunk #1
The cultivar that made stable hybrids possible, and the ancestor of most European commercial lines.
Skunk #1 was stabilised in California in the 1970s and brought to the Netherlands shortly after. Its importance is structural rather than sensory: it was among the first hybrids reliable enough to breed from, and it sits behind an enormous number of later cultivars.
The pungent character it is named for became a defining commercial trait, for better and worse.
